THE NORTON 76.

(Info Provided by John Favill - one of the original design team)

"Following the decision by the Norton-Villiers-Triumph Company to cease trading in 1975, the employees of the Company, including management representatives, engineering staff and the unions made joint efforts to obtain financing and support in order to continue the Villiers and the Norton Motorcycle operation which was the profitable part of the Norton-Villiers-Triumph company.

To show the progressive nature of these attempts a newly styled Norton Commando was designed, tested and ridden by representatives of the motorcycle press in the UK.

The motorcycle was named the Norton 76."

The differences between the Norton 76 and the 1975 Commando:

"Twin front discs with FTP cast aluminum wheels.

Brembo brake cylinders and hydraulics front and rear. Brake pads with

wear indicator warning lights.

Paoli front fork.

Increased swing arm length for improved handling and stability.

New style narrow 5 Imp. (6 gal US) gallon fuel tank.

Single S.U. Carburetor for improved response, lower fuel consumption

and lower emission levels so to meet 1975 USA Federal legislation for

exhaust emission control..

Revised Ignition system to provide closer POI ( point of ignition) control ( essential with the improved carburetion given by the SU Carb).

Some form of electronic ignition was high on the list of things to be done.

Fenders by Paoli.

Tires by Dunlap.

The lettering for NORTON that appeared on the tank and side cover was

chosen to signify that the Norton 76 was by a different organization compared

to what had gone before."
